Garrett Oliver in Texas
November 4, 2009Garrett Oliver, Brewmaster at The Brooklyn Brewery, recently made a swing through Texas appearing at places like The Dixie Cup in Houston and the Alamo Draughthouse in Austin. Garrett is perhaps best known for being one of the world’s foremost experts on beer and food pairings.
We were fortunate to attend the Brooklyn Beer Dinner at the Alamo Draughthouse Lakecreek where Garrett paired Local 1, Local 2, Black Chocolate Stout and Cuvee De Cardoz with some excellent dishes prepared by a local chef. All of the food and beer was excellent. I was a big fan of Cuvee De Cardoz, which is testament to the creativity and unique flavors imparted by using a blend of different sugars and spices in the brewing process.
Garrett was immensely entertaining and championed slow food, exploring the worlds of wine and spirits in addition to beer and enjoying fine craft foods and beverages with family. If you ever get the chance to hear him speak, don’t pass it by. He was nice enough to take a picture with me too!
